History:
The Greenville County Recreation District (GCRD) is a special purpose district created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1968 to provide parks and recreation for the citizens of Greenville County. Currently the district includes all unincorporated areas of Greenville County as well as the municipalities of Fountain Inn and Travelers Rest.
Commission & Staff:
GCRD is governed by an independent 7 member commission. GCRD employs 87 full time staff and over 106 part time staff.
Parks & Facilities Overview:
GCRD manages over 51 parks and facilities throughout Greenville County including 7 community centers, 3 waterparks, ice rink, inline rink, a camp & retreat center, and a 10 mile rail-trail greenway.
Budget & Funding:
GCRD’s annual operating budget is approximately $12 million. Roughly half of our annual operating revenue is generated through property taxes and the other half comes from self generated revenues including program fees, rental fees, sponsorships, and grants. The hospitality tax passed by Greenville County in 2006 provided approximately $40 million of capital funds for new tourism gennerating park development.
