Meet The Coaches

Tim Driscoll:  Director of Tennis

Tim began playing tennis at the age of 10 with his father and immediately loved the game.  By the age of 17 he was ranked #3 in Tennessee and 21st in the south.  Attending college at Virginia Intermont College on a full scholarship, Tim was awarded the NAIA Division VII Player of the Year in his senior year and reached the semi finals of the National Doubles Collegiate Tournament.  Immediately after graduating from college with a BS in Sports Management, he was certified by the USPTR.  After teaching at the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club, he became the head teaching pro at Bristol Country Club.  After moving to Greenville, Tim became the head tennis pro at the Thornblade Club.  After six years, Tim came to Greenville Rec to build a tennis program and has developed a great junior program with over 800 kids participating in the program and USTA sanctioned tournaments.  With over sixteen years of experience as a full time tennis professional with both USPTA and USPTR certification, Tim feels blessed to be able to do what he does each day.

Scott Monahan: Tennis Pro for Greenville Rec

Scott has been the Head Tennis Pro for Greenville Rec since January 2008. He obtained his USPTR certification in Charlotte. Scott works with all levels of junior development and adult instruction both private and group settings. He was the coach of five USTA Junior Team Tennis teams based out of the Pavilion for the Spring 2009 season. One of the teams (Under 12 Intermediate Flight) advanced to the state playoffs in Sumter. He holds a degree in International Relations from Syracuse. Upon graduating from SU in 1999 Scott lived in New York City and worked in the “corporate world” for eight years. For the past couple of years Scott has been very fortunate to be employed in the tennis industry where he has the opportunity to express and share his passion for the game of tennis.

Jim Greene: Tennis Pro for Greenville Rec

Jim first picked up the racquet at age 8, since then tennis has been a lifelong passion. He was once told at a young age follow your passions and he has done just that for the past 16 years as a teaching pro. Jim was taught by Dennis Van der Meer the first Professional player to standardize teaching progressions to develop consistent stroke output for all types of shots. Van der Meer has undoubtedly instructed more players and coaches than anyone in the game. The method he conceived is taught in over 115 countries worldwide by more than 14,000 members. Jim has been a certified teaching Professional since 1996.

Jim has also worked under the tutelage of Paul Scarpa, Mens Head Coach at Furman University (the winningest coach in NCAA history). Serving as Assistant to the Director at Furman Tennis Camps, Greenville S.C.

Throughout his career as Head Coach or Head Pro, Jim strives to provide quality and retainable instruction for all skill levels. Passing along his knowledge for the game in an eloquent and encouraging manner promoting “process over outcome”. This teaching style challenges his players to grow and learn each time they step onto the court. Jim has also coached at the High School and NJCAA/NCAA collegiate levels including visits at the national level. Jim played at north Greenville Junior College and was on the the practice squad at the University of Hawaii.

After completing a six year stint in the U.S. Navy and traveling the globe, Jim returned to his native Carolina to raise a family. Attesting “I’ve lived and seen many beautiful places and met many people around the world but- the best things in life can be found in your own back yard.  Jim lives near Tryon N.C. with his loving wife Rhett and three sons, Jay, Jonathon and Alex.
