Recreation District Breaks Ground for Baseball Complex at Municipal Stadium
The Greenville County Recreation District breaks ground this Wednesday, July 14 at 10:30 am on a four field baseball complex at Greenville Municipal Stadium on Mauldin Road. The $4 million project is a significant component in what the District envisions as an 800 acre plus “Central Park” of Greenville County with Lake Conestee Nature Park as the nucleus.
The new baseball complex is part of a $4 million package that calls for four new baseball fields and renovating the 25+ year old stadium, according to Greenville County Recreation District Executive Director Gene Smith. Smith detailed the project’s history and support from partners including Greenville County, the City of Greenville, Lake Conestee Foundation, ReWa, and Greenville Little League Association.
“Greenville Little League Association recognized the need for a multi-field tournament complex and supported the project through the TRAC Plan in 2006,” he said. “Greenville County Council later designated $4 million in Hospitality Tax funding. The City of Greenville granted the Recreation District a 40 year lease to the stadium.”
Both the City and Lake Conestee Foundation’s willingness to engage in a land exchange contributed to the project’s success. The Foundation traded an 11 acre parcel next to the stadium to the city in exchange for 15 acres of city property on the Reedy. This provided property for the new baseball complex and gave Conestee Foundation highly valued environmentally sensitive riverfront property.
ReWa, also an important partner according to Smith, granted the Recreation District an easement through property on the Reedy to continue the Greenville Hospital Swamp Rabbit Trail from the city limits at I-85 to Lake Conestee. When trail construction is complete Lake Conestee Nature Park will become a major destination along the Greenville Hospital System Swamp Rabbit Trail as it expands north and south through Greenville County.
The project, summarized Smith, makes available 450 acres of nature trails and beautiful upland forest at Lake Conestee Nature Park with 150 acres of landfill on the Reedy for additional recreational use. The stadium and new 11 acre baseball complex will serve area residents and attract major tournaments.
“This offers residents and visitors to our community a centrally located facility that combines both passive and active recreational opportunities,” said Smith. The project and the partnerships that brought it to fruition help make Greenville a tremendous place to live, work, and raise families.”
