History of Slater Hall

In 1927 H.N. Slater bought 466 acres in northern Greenville County with intent to build a textile mill and a new community village centered on Slater Hall. The hall served as the nucleus of the village providing educational, social, and cultural resources for the mill workers. In 1945 Slater Manufacturing Col. sold the Hall to Slater Community Association for one dollar. In 1984 the Association gifted the Hall to the Recreation District. The District operated the building as a community center for several years but did not have the resources to rehabilitate the structure to make it safe and accessible. When the hall was closed an activities building was constructed on the site to house the senior citizen program. In 2005 the Slater Hall Citizens Committee was formed. The committee in cooperation with Greenville Rec  re-opened Slater Hall in 2010.

  • The Slater Hall citizens Committee meets monthly. Lawanda Curry is Greenville Rec’s representative to the committee.  Lawanda can be reached  at 288-6470.
  • Be sure to come by and play on the new playground, have a picnic, and take a walk on the new paved walking path.
  • Senior Action provides senior programming Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.
  • The Recreation District offers an After-School Program from 2:30 pm – 6:00 pm.

Stay up to date each month.
