Swamp Rabbit Interactive Mapping Application

A collaboration between the City of Greenville GIS Department, City of Greenville Parks & Recreation, and Greenville County Recreation District brings you an ArcGIS Interactive Map to your web browser, tablet, or smartphone. Trip planning along the Swamp Rabbit Trail is now easier than ever, at home, on the road, or from the trail.

The application identifies Mile Markers, Restrooms, Parking Lots, Points of Interest, Water Fountains, ATMs, Info Points and more! Each icon on the map expands with more information including pictures and trail details. You can even get turn-by-turn directions to your preferred trailhead or parking area.

The mobile app, ArcGIS by ESRI, is available from the iTunes App Store or Android and Windows Market. Simply search Swamp Rabbit and click on the web map to get started.

On your web browser: Go directly to the map or open ArcGIS Online and search for Swamp Rabbit from the search toolbar.

GEOCACHING on the Swamp Rabbit

What is geocaching? Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Geocaches can be found all over the world. It is common for geocachers to hide caches in locations that are important to them, reflecting a special interest or skill of the cache owner. These locations can be quite diverse. They may be at your local park, at the end of a long hike, underwater or on the side of a city street.

There are over 1.4 million geocaches in the world today. As of September, 2011, over 60 active Geocaches are located within approximately two-tenths of a mile from the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail, and more are being hidden every day. So here’s another opportunity to enjoy this great upstate recreational resource.

GPATS Transportation Survey:

Greenville-Pickens Area Transportation Study (GPATS) has begun a five-year update of the 2030 Long Range Transportation Plan, which was completed in 2007. The survey was developed to get feedback from residents regarding their transportation priorities, including road projects, intersections, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and public transit. Please take a few minutes to fill out our transportation survey here:  Click Here To Take The Survey.

Public support of greenways and other non-motorized transportation facilities like bicycle lanes, bike centers, and improved bus routes goes a long way in planning the future development of the Upstate.

Check out “Trail Updates” for useful greenway information from the Division of Greenways, Natural, & Historic Resources, or e-mail us at greenways@gcrd.org to receive regular e-mail updates.

Trail Status:

Open: North Greenville Hospital (Hwy 276 @ Grandview Cemetery) to Greenville Tech’s Barton Campus (Cleveland St. 7 Faris Rd.) is 13.5 miles of paved asphalt trail.   ReWa Administrative Office (Near Mauldin Rd. & Parkins Mill Rd under I-85) into Lake Conestee Nature Park is about 4 miles of paved asphalt trail with a short “On-Street Connection” section and a crushed stonedust section. Enjoy.

1/2 Mile Markers: Mile markers are installed at 1/2 mile intervals thanks to the hard work of  volunteers from Johnson Controls.  Jeremy Davis from Set Up Events Inc. has certified the trail distances for running events.  The first marker on the northern end starts with the number 23.  Eventually mile 0 will be at the NC state line much like an interstate system.

E-911 System (1/10 Mile Markers): The stencils in the middle of the trail reading “SRT###” are part of the Emergency 911 Action Plan with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. If there is an emergency on the trail, please call 911 and locate the nearest trail stencil to notify dispatchers of your location on the trail. ‘SRT’ identifies the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The following 3 digits represent the mile and tenth mile you are located near. For example “SRT314″ means you are at mile 31.4 on the Swamp Rabbit (and next door to the Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery and TTR Bike’s Ride Center).

All greenways are closed to any form of motor vehicles.

Events: A reminder,  like with any facility or park at the Greenville County Recreation District if you are planning on having an event on the GHS Swamp Rabbit you need to fill out an event permit.  It will help us get the trail in top shape for your event and avoid the chance to two events on the same part of the trail on the same day. While we will never close the trail to the general public, knowing about special events ahead of time will help us let everyone know the “where” and “when” of all the events on the trail.
