History of The Pavilion
This 66,000 sq. ft. indoor recreation center opened in 1990. The story behind it mirrors a history of partnerships that have enabled the Recreation District to build new parks. In this case the Western Carolina Regional Sewer Authority donated the 16 acre sewer lagoon that the Pavilion sits on today. Since then WCRSA has partnered with the Recreation District on other ventures like Corey Burns Park, Pelham Mill Park, and Brushy Creek Soccer Complex.
The Pavilion is also unique in that it is one of only three parks in the Recreation District family which was built with self generated revenue bonds. Westside Aquatic Center and Discovery Island Waterpark were the others.
Today the Pavilion offers an ice skating rink, inline hockey rink, indoor play room with inflatable toys, and large meeting rooms. The outdoor campus is home to six tennis courts, playground, historic miniature children’s passenger train, and 3 soccer fields.
Over the years the Pavilion has produced nationally ranked figure skaters, served thousands of children in afterschool and summer day camp programs, hosted countless seasonal events and regional soccer tournaments and been a leader in providing unique recreational services to the upstate and its visitors.
